The entire In-the-Canal hearing aid is built into a custom-made shell obtained from an impression of the ear canal. This style of hearing aid is most appropriate for mild to moderate losses. While this is one of the smallest hearing aid styles available, it may not be appropriate for certain degrees and configurations of hearing loss.
In-the-Canal Hearing Aids
The In-the-Canal (ITC) hearing aid is made to fit the size and shape of a person’s ear canal. In-the-Canal (ITC) hearing aids are custom designed, smaller in size, and fit more deeply into the ear canal than in-the-ear hearing aids. They are typically less visible than in-the-ear hearing aids. All of the components are housed within a single plastic shell.
An In-the-Canal hearing aid is custom molded and fits partly in the ear canal. The In-the-Canal style is available in the programmable, digital, and conventional hearing aids.
In-the-Canal Hearing Aid Benefits
Benefits of this type of hearing instrument include:
- Is less visible in the ear
- Is easy to use with the telephone
- Includes features that won’t fit on completely-in-the-canal aids, but the small size can make the features difficult to adjust
- May not fit well in smaller ears
